Child's First Library Card
A child may get their own Library card when they are able to write their first and last name. A parent or legal guardian must be present to co-sign the registration. Please see the Library Card Eligibility page for more details and requirements.
1000 Books Before Kindergarten
This is a multi-year pre-literacy reading program designed for young children and their families. The program encourages families to read at least 1000 books to their children before they enter Kindergarten. Families can participate by registering online or at the Library.
This program has no end date except your child going to school, so don’t feel rushed - just enjoy the experience! Take every chance you have to read with your children, tell and talk about stories, say nursery rhymes, sing songs, and attend library programs. By reading just three stories a day you and your child will have read over 1000 books in one year.
Field Trips to the Library
Field trips from daycare centers, schools, and Scouts located in West Allis are welcome. Please fill out a Library Visit Request form to arrange a visit. Field trips are free and limited to two visits per class per year. The following are some of the most popular topics for field trips.
For Younger Children
Field trips for young children are generally 45 minutes long and include stories and a tour of the Children's Department.
Research
The librarian gives a presentation that lasts approximately 45 minutes and includes library materials that can be used for the class research projects.
Boy & Girl Scouts
Scouts are encouraged to work on badges that require use of the library.
